Commercial Wall-Mounted DC Charger Case Study: 40kW OC Series in an Ethiopian Industrial Park

The Challenge

An industrial park carpark in Ethiopia wanted to introduce EV charging as a new tenant and visitor amenity—and as an additional revenue stream. The asset had open parking bays and an existing electrical supply, but several constraints:

  • Limited bay footprint — floor-mounted 120–360kW DC units would have been oversized for the site’s initial throughput and physical layout.
  • Need for revenue logic — simply providing power was not enough; the park needed session billing, payment acceptance, and public discoverability.
  • Operational visibility — with multiple bays, the operator needed centralized monitoring of charger status, energy consumption, and electrical parameters.

The operator was looking for a wall-mountable 40kW-class DC charger that could act as a commercial-grade, revenue-ready charging point.

The Max Power Solution

We deployed 40kW OC Series wall-mounted DC single-gun chargers across the park’s parking inventory, configured for a public-facing commercial environment:

  • 40kW DC single-gun output — a practical fast-charge tier per bay, balancing charging speed with manageable draw on the site’s electrical supply.
  • Wall-mounted unit with floor pedestal/column — the OC Series’ wall-mount design was paired with a column/pedestal so each open-lot bay could host its own charger at the vehicle, without sacrificing the compact footprint.
  • Type-A RCD + OCPP 1.6J — Type-A RCD provides AC residual-current protection for the commercial installation; OCPP 1.6J connects each charger to the operator’s cloud management platform.
  • Cloud platform integration — the operator monitors online status, charging power, current and voltage parameters in real time, and can remotely control charging sessions and receive automatic fault reports.
  • Smart power distribution — OCPP smart charging allocates the site’s available capacity across active chargers, protecting the shared transformer as the bay count grows.
  • Online payment tools + map-APP integration — chargers are listed and discoverable through map applications, and sessions support online payment, converting a static parking bay into a billable charging asset.

The Results

  • New revenue stream — previously unused parking bays became paid, discoverable charging points accessible through map apps and online payment.
  • Centralized operations — the cloud dashboard gave the park operator real-time visibility into every charger, without on-site patrols.
  • Scalable bay model — wall-mounted 40kW units can be added bay-by-bay as demand grows, matching capex to actual utilization.
  • Tenant & visitor amenity — the park enhanced its offering to EV-owning tenants and visitors, supporting broader EV adoption in the region.

Key Takeaways for Commercial Parking Operators

  1. Match charger class to bay throughput. 40kW wall-mounted DC is the right commercial tier when bays are small-to-mid volume and floor cabinets are overkill.
  2. Revenue requires software. OCPP + online payments + map integration is what turns a charger from an amenity into an income line.
  3. Visibility reduces OPEX. Cloud monitoring and remote fault reporting replace truck rolls with proactive maintenance.
  4. Smart charging protects shared capacity. OCPP load management lets a site scale bay-by-bay without immediately upgrading the transformer.
