GB/T vs CCS2 vs NACS vs CHAdeMO: The 2026 EV Charging Connector Landscape

Connectors are not a technical footnote — they are a market-access decision. Ship a CCS2 charger to a NACS-dominated US site and it collects dust. The Four Standards That Still Matter

🇨🇳 GB/T 27930 (China)

  • Region: Mainland China exclusively — ~33% of global DC charger share by volume

  • Connector: Separate 9-pin DC round coupler (GB/T 20234.3); AC and DC are different ports

  • Comms: CAN bus via GB/T 27930

  • Spec ceiling: 1000V / 250A (legacy 2015); 2023 revision lifts to 1500V / 800A, ~800kW+ with liquid cooling

  • Next-gen: ChaoJi​ (joint China–Japan, up to 900kW, IEC PAS 63454) slowly entering high-power corridors

🇪🇺 CCS2 (Combined Charging System Type 2)

  • Region: Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Middle East, most of Africa & LATAM — ~28% global share, the dominant export​ standard

  • Connector: Type 2 AC inlet + 2 DC pins, single port

  • Comms: PLC via ISO 15118 (enables Plug & Charge)

  • Spec ceiling: 1000V / 500A, 350–400kW deployed, 500kW+ with liquid-cooling; evolving toward MCS​ (Megawatt Charging System) for trucks

  • Regulatory: EU AFIR mandates CCS2-compatible public DC by default

🇺🇸 NACS / SAE J3400 (North America)

Region: USA, Canada, Mexico, Israel — 48% of North American DC connectors by early 2026, CCS1 down to 40%

History: Tesla proprietary → opened 2022 → ratified as SAE J3400 in 2024; Ford, GM, Rivian, Mercedes, Volvo, Honda all shipping native NACS from 2025

Connector: 5-pin compact, AC+DC in one port, ~half the size of CCS1

Spec ceiling: 1000V / ~500A, 250kW today, 600kW+ on V4 Supercharger hardware

Outlook: CCS1 effectively dead for new builds by 2027; dual NACS+CCS1 outlets now common on US dispensers

🇯🇵 CHAdeMO (Japan)

  • Region: Japan legacy (Nissan Leaf, older Mitsubishi); ~7% global share, declining

  • Spec: Up to 400kW on CHAdeMO 2.0; CHAdeMO 2.1 (May 2026) hits 800kW; Japan itself migrating to CCS2 + ChaoJi

  • Verdict: Do not design new export hardware around CHAdeMO. Support it only as a secondary legacy outlet if serving Japanese fleet retrofits.
